Apprentice

What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is a time proven approach to developing skilled tradespeople by combining hands-on experience with classroom instruction. At I-TAP, apprentices gain the majority of their training on the jobsite, working under the mentorship of experienced journeypersons. Additionally, for two weeks each semester, apprentices transition from the field to the classroom to study essential theory and code.

Our classes are held during the day, five days a week, providing a balanced schedule that allows apprentices to focus on their education. Unlike traditional programs, which often require evening classes after a full day of work, I-TAP’s program ensures apprentices have their evenings free, preventing burnout and allowing for personal and family time.

I-TAP Training Meets State & Federal Requirements

Apprenticeship programs typically span 3 to 5 years, depending on the trade. By federal regulations, apprentices must complete 144 hours of classroom instruction annually. At I-TAP, apprentices receive 160 hours of classroom instruction each year, ensuring a thorough and comprehensive education.

Those in the Electrical Apprenticeship program will take the Electrical Journeyperson Certification Exam in their final year. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will earn journeyperson status in their trade, fully prepared to advance in their careers.

Highest of Standards

I-TAP’s classes are designed to be interactive, blending lectures, group study, and hands-on lab work to provide a well-rounded learning experience. In the classroom, apprentices study theory and code, gaining a deeper understanding of their fieldwork. We place significant emphasis on lab work as an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.

To enhance this hands-on learning experience, I-TAP integrates its lab and classroom facilities, allowing apprentices to work in dedicated spaces rather than sharing labs with other programs, which is common in many traditional programs. This approach ensures that apprentices have ample opportunity to engage in lab-based learning.

Our state-of-the-art lab facility is designed to closely replicate field conditions, allowing students to develop practical skills. Apprentices will spend between 25-35% of each semester participating in hands-on lab work, further strengthening their preparedness for success in the field.

Training

What is a trainee?

California Labor Code section 3099 requires that all electricians working for a C-10 licensed contractor be certified by the State of California as journeymen, or be registered in a state approved apprenticeship program, or be registered in a federally approved apprenticeship program (I-TAP), or be registered with the State of California as an electrician trainee and be enrolled in a state approved trainee program (I-TAP). This regulation eliminates the option to work as an electrician without meeting one of these three qualifications—journeyman, apprentice, or trainee—making it essential for individuals to formalize their training and certification to pursue a career in the field.

So what is the difference between apprentices and trainees?

Trainees at I-TAP receive the same high-quality learning experience as apprentices. They participate alongside apprentices in the same classroom sessions, engage in the same projects, and benefit from the same instruction, ensuring a consistent and thorough educational experience for all students.

Trainees now have flexible options for their class schedule. They have the opportunity to complete the full 5-year curriculum in just 6 months, allowing them to prepare for the California certification exam and begin their careers as journeyman electricians in a shortened timeframe.

If you are seeking to launch a career in the electrical construction field, I-TAP’s Trainee Program provides high-quality, compliant, and flexible training to help you get started on the right path.
